Roxana Gheorghe
Visual Artist Exploring Architecture, Memory & Migration
Roxana Gheorghe is a New York City–based visual artist working in photography and digital abstraction.
Born in Bucharest and trained as an engineer, she transforms architectural photographs into geometric compositions that explore migration, memory, and structural change. Her Broken series examines the tension between stability and fragmentation.
She has received recognition from the Luxembourg Art Prize and the International Color Awards, and her work has been exhibited in New York, Brooklyn, and on Long Island.
Bio
Through photography and geometric abstraction, I explore how architecture carries memory and how migration reshapes our understanding of place, identity, and belonging.
Artist Statement
My father introduced me to architecture when I was a child.
He taught me how to draw, understand proportion, structure, and rhythm.
He also loved classical music and would ask if I could hear the rhythm of a bridge or whether a violin was out of tune. My father encouraged me to see the architecture not as a building, but as a reflection of history, culture, and experience.
Although drawn to art, my interest in math and physics led me to engineering in Bucharest. In New York, I worked in business while continuing to explore photography. Walking the city with a camera helped me understand a new place while maintaining a connection to the one I had left behind.
Using architectural photographs, I fragment and reconstruct elements of the built environment through geometry, color, and reflection. My work moves between representation and abstraction, treating architecture as a physical structure and metaphor for identity. Buildings become repositories of memory, carrying traces of histories, migration, adaptation, and change. Influenced by Bauhaus and Constructivism, I am drawn to the tension between order and disruption. Geometric interventions alter familiar spaces, creating moments where stability gives way to uncertainty and reconstruction. I approach architecture as something continually reshaped by time, experience, and perception. Through photography and digital abstraction, I explore how places remain with us after we leave them. My work invites viewers to assemble meaning from fragments and consider how memory, movement, and the architecture shape our understanding of identity.
In exhibitions, my works are conceived as relationships within space. Scale, sequence, and distance extend the visual language, encouraging viewers to navigate the gallery much like a city—through observation, movement, and reconstruction.
