Who I am
Roxana Gheorghe
New York City-based Visual Artist
Bio
Roxana Gheorghe is a New York-based visual artist whose work pulses at the intersection of architecture, geometry, and music. Influenced by Bauhaus cross-disciplinary collaboration and Constructivist dynamism, she examines themes of light, humanity, and identity through digital abstraction.
Her father shaped her architectural vision by revealing connections between music and built form, teaching her that architecture tells history and gives cities identity. Though artistically inclined, Gheorghe pursued mechanical engineering at the Polytechnic Institute of Bucharest, then an MBA at Baruch College. While running her marketing business in New York, she turned to art as an outlet for personal expression, studying photography at School of Visual Arts and Pratt Institute, and mixed media at Parsons School of Design. Her engineering background informs her approach to composition, where structural precision and analytical rigor shape her examination of geometric form.
The 2020 pandemic marked a turning point, prompting her to reconcile her Romanian and American identities and examine architecture's role in modern life. In her New York City New Bauhaus project, she explores place and identity through urban architecture, blending photography, geometric abstraction, and digital manipulation. Her latest series, Broken, examines how migration shapes identity through impermanence, resilience, and cultural mediation, raising questions about belonging in evolving urban landscapes marked by gentrification and migration.
Gheorghe's work has been featured at the Florence Biennale 2025 and Chianciano Biennale 2024, with a piece in the permanent collection of Museo d'Arte Chianciano Terme. Recent exhibitions include the Art League of Long Island (2025), LIC Artists, Inc. (2024), and The Center for Contemporary Art, Bedminster (2024). Her awards include two honors at the Vienna International Photo Award (2021), and the Luxembourg Art Prize Certificate (2024 and 2025). She completed the MoCA Artistic Residency in Venice and Treviso (2025).
Artist Statement
As a multidisciplinary artist, I intertwine architecture, music, and identity into geometric artworks that transport across cultures.
Drawing from my Romanian heritage and shaped by my New York City life, my digital paintings and photography fuse the innovative spirit of European avant-garde movements with American influences.
Art has always been the thread connecting my father and me. As a descendant of an opera singer and an aspiring urban architect, my father played a pivotal role in shaping my artistic journey. He instilled in me a deep appreciation for architectural design and music, often encouraging me to notice the intricate details of our surroundings. His words, ‘Listen to the second violin, Roxana,’ or ‘Look at the rhythm of this bridge,’ highlighted the parallels between music and architecture. This early influence shaped my view of architecture as a living entity that embodies identity, history, and emotion. My background in mechanical engineering further enhanced my understanding of the geometries inherent in our built environment.
The pandemic of 2020 was a pivotal moment, prompting me to reconcile my Romanian and American identities while deepening my comprehension of architecture and modern life. Transitioning from street photography to digital collages, I began creating works that bridge cultures. This shift allowed me to encapsulate the essence of my surroundings, merging my heritage with the vibrant New York City landscape. Each piece is an open invitation for viewers to engage with their environment meaningfully.
One of my recent series, “New York City New BAUHAUS,” reinterprets iconic landmarks like the Oculus through a Bauhaus-inspired lens, showcasing geometric forms infused with distinct American nuances. Influenced by contemporary digital artists such as Helen Frankenthal, my work engages public spaces and encourages reflection on the relationship between place and identity. Embracing experimentation, I push the boundaries of digital painting and photography in my practice.
